1. Safe Alternative: Prevent File Deletion (Windows Defender Exclusion) (Recommended)
If your main reason for wanting to turn off Windows Defender is because the antivirus often automatically deletes game files or cracks, you do not need to turn it off. You simply need to add the game folder to the exclusion list.
Steps:
- Create a Special Folder: Create a new folder on your Hard Drive (e.g., name it GAMES) to store your game installations.
- Open Windows Security: Click the shield icon on the taskbar or search for “Windows Security” in the Start menu.
- Go to Settings: Open Virus & threat protection > Manage settings.
- Add Exclusion: Scroll down until you find the Exclusions section, then click Add or remove exclusions.
- Select Folder: Click the Add an exclusion button, select Folder, then find and select the GAMES folder you created earlier.
- Finish: Once added, you can extract or install games into that GAMES folder. Windows Defender will no longer scan that folder, keeping your game files safe from automatic deletion.
2. How to Turn Off Windows Defender Temporarily (Via Settings)
This method is the safest and recommended if you only need to turn off the antivirus briefly, for example when installing specific software detected as a false positive or when tweaking the system.
Steps:
- Open the Start menu, type Windows Security, and press Enter.
- Select the Virus & threat protection menu.
- Under the “Virus & threat protection settings” section, click Manage settings.
- Find the Real-time protection option and toggle the switch to Off.
Note: Windows will automatically re-enable this feature after a short period or when the computer is restarted.
3. How to Turn Off Permanently (For Windows Pro/Enterprise Users)
If you are using Windows 10/11 Pro or Enterprise version, you can use the Local Group Policy Editor to turn off Defender permanently.
Step 1: Turn Off Tamper Protection Before changing policies, you must turn off the anti-tamper feature so Windows doesn’t block the changes you make.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage settings.
- Turn off Tamper Protection.
Step 2: Use Group Policy
- Press
Windows + Ron your keyboard. - Type
gpedit.mscand press Enter. - Navigate to the following folder:
Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates>Windows Components>Microsoft Defender Antivirus. - Find the file named Turn off Microsoft Defender Antivirus in the right pane.
- Double-click the file, then select the Enabled option.
- Click Apply and OK.
- Restart your computer.
4. How to Turn Off Permanently (For Windows Home Users)
Windows Home does not have the Group Policy Editor, so we must use the Registry Editor. This method is slightly more technical.
Important: Back up your registry or create a System Restore Point before proceeding.
Step 1: Turn Off Tamper Protection Just like the previous method, this is mandatory.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage settings.
- Ensure Tamper Protection is set to Off.
Step 2: Edit Registry
- Press
Windows + R, typeregedit, and press Enter. - Navigate to the following address (copy-paste in the top address bar):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender - Right-click on the Windows Defender folder (in the left pane), select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.
- Name the new file:
DisableAntiSpyware. - Double-click
DisableAntiSpywareand change the Value data from0to1. - Click OK and Restart your computer.
To Re-enable: Simply delete the DisableAntiSpyware file you created or change its value back to 0.
5. The Safest Way: Install Third-Party Antivirus
This is the method designed by Microsoft itself. If Windows detects another active antivirus (such as Avast, McAfee, Malwarebytes Premium), Windows Defender will automatically disable itself to prevent system conflicts.
This is the best solution because you disable Defender without leaving your computer unprotected.
How to:
- Download the installer for your chosen antivirus.
- Install and update its database.
- Check Windows Security; you will see the status “Microsoft Defender Antivirus is turned off” or managed by another application.
6. Troubleshooting: Windows Defender Won’t Turn Off?
If you have tried the methods above (especially Registry) and Defender remains active after a restart, it is likely that Tamper Protection has turned back on or a Windows Update has reset the registry settings.
Solution: Use a free third-party tool like Defender Control (Sordum). This small application allows you to turn off Defender with a single click. However, be careful when downloading tools like this; ensure the source is trusted because these tools are often detected as viruses by Defender itself (ironically).
- Download Defender Control.
- Turn off Real-time protection temporarily via Settings.
- Run Defender Control and click Disable Windows Defender.
- The icon will turn red, indicating Defender is completely off.
