Step 1: Visit the Official Website
To avoid viruses or fake versions, always download WinRAR from the official site.
- Open your web browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, etc.).
- Go to www.rarlab.com.
- Click on the “Downloads” link on the left menu (or the main download section).
Step 2: Choose the Correct Version
You will see a long list of versions in different languages.
- Look for the English section (or your preferred language).
- For most modern computers: Click on the link that says WinRAR x64 (64 bit).
- Note: Almost all Windows 10 and Windows 11 computers are 64-bit.
- For very old computers: If you are on an old 32-bit system, choose the WinRAR x86 (32 bit) link.
Step 3: Install WinRAR
- Once the file (e.g.,
winrar-x64-624.exe) finishes downloading, click on it to open. - If Windows asks for permission (“Do you want to allow this app to make changes?”), click Yes.
- The installation window will appear. Click Install.
- Setup Screen: You will see a list of file types (RAR, ZIP, 7Z, ISO, etc.). It is recommended to click Toggle all so WinRAR opens all compressed files by default.
- Click OK, then click Done.
Step 4: Using WinRAR
WinRAR is now installed! You don’t need to open the app directly to use it.
- To Extract: Right-click on any
.raror.zipfile and select WinRAR > Extract Here. - To Compress: Right-click on a folder or file and select WinRAR > Add to archive….
Note on the “Free Trial”: WinRAR is technically “Shareware” with a 40-day trial. However, after the trial ends, the software will continue to work forever. You will simply see a small pop-up message asking you to buy a license when you open the main app, which you can close and ignore.
